Gate Hill on the Herrick Road

In 2021 no one seems to remember “Gate Hill” on the Herrick Road but it is mentioned in the daily journal of Minnie Grindall, a woman who lived on that road in the area that must have been called Gate Hill. Sylvia Wardwell said the Brooksville border was at the top of that hill so at some time that may have been the reason for a gate-or it was to keep cows from wandering.  This photo was probably taken in the early 1900s.

This is a copy of Minnie’s handwritten diary mention of Gate Hill.

In her June 27th, 1913 diary entry Minnie Blake Grindall writes

”Everything looks beautiful now. I saw some wild roses on top the schoolhouse hill, and the cinnamon roses across the road from Frances Wood are blooming.  The daisies buttercups and clover are so pretty. I hate to see it cut.  We picked a big bunch of trailing arbutus last night at the foot of “Gate Hill” it is lovely and you can smell it a long way.”
