Samuel Shorey, carriage manufacturer in Sedgwick, Maine

Samuel Shorey was born circa 1833 in China, Maine and died due to an “accident by railroad” in Portland, Maine Dec. 12, 1904.  His parents were Daniel Shapleigh and Elizabeth “Betsey” Howes Shorey.  On July 8, 1855 he married Mary A. Handy in Albion, Maine and they had three children,
Carrie E. Shorey b. March 25, 1858
George E. Shorey b. Aug. 23, 1860 and
Maud F. Shorey born Sept. 30, 1865.1

In 1860 Samuel (28) and Mary (25) were living in Belfast with Carrie who, at the time, was 2 years old. On Oct.1861, Samuel enlisted in the Union Army, Company B, Maine 1st Cavalry Regiment and he was mustered out Nov. 25, 1864.

In the 1870 census Samuel, Mary and their three children were still living in Belfast but in 1872 Samuel sent out a flyer announcing the start of his business as a carriage manufacturer in Sedgwick. In November of that same year Samuel filed for a military disability pension2

In the 1880 census Samuel and Mary were still in Sedgwick with their three children, Carrie E., age 22, George E. age 19 and Maud F, age 14 and Samuel continued as a carriage manufacturer.

By 1900 Samuel, now age 69 and Mary age 66 were living in Portland, Maine with Maud S. Riley, 34, Sarah E. Shorey, 35, Gladys M. Shorey, 10 and Everett E. Shorey, 3.

Samuel died in 1904 in a railroad accident and Mary filed as his widow for a military pension.
