The Wreck of the Martin L. Hall (MAR.4)

Memoir by Ruth Kimball Messinger of the wreck of the ship Martin L. Hall

Ruth Messinger is said to have given the story of the 1856 wreck of the Martin T. Hall, a ship built by Wyer G. Sargent, to Ruth Sargent during the time Ms. Sargent was transcribing Wyer’s personal journals.  Though the story is unverified, we note that on August 24, 1856 Wyer writes in his journal, “Heard of the wreck of the N. L. Hall.”  It’s possible that the first initials were misinterpreted during transcription and if that is the case then, to some extent, this entry supports Ms. Messinger’s story.
